Illuminated Manuscript

After learning about illuminated manuscripts for weeks, I took a stab at making my own for class:

These are some of the images (aside from the Book of Kells) that I looked at for inspiration:

  1. I really like the illustrated capitals you posted here showing your inspiration behind your manuscript. Your basic color palate is nice, and reminds me of certain colors taken out of the book of Kells. Your craftsmanship is really nice on the blue parts, and the intertwining is really nice, and reminds me of the book of Durrow.

  2. Hey Angie,
I really enjoyed you're use of capitals in the paragraph page. It really helped draw your eye around the pages. The story was great because it was autobiographical without straight out explaining itself. the knotwork border is seems so intricate yet simple at the same time. The "A" was very nice and was more abstracted, but the use of knotwork vines within the letter were very much like what we talked about in the Book of Kells.

  3. Hey, Angie!
I really like the fact that your manuscript looks a whole lot like the ones we've been studying, particularly the Book of Kells. It comes across as being very classy, particularly with your insanely-awesome craftsmanship. The "A" on the carpet page is very well designed, particularly with the knot-work and the border in the left-hand corner. Your text page is also very well done, particularly with the capitals throughout the page.

  4. I really enjoyed your capitals, they are so cute, and clearly you! I also liked your knot work done around your carpet page, very simple, but complex. Your little imagery around the manuscript really reminds me of the Book of Kells and it makes it very interesting to look at! Great work!

  5. Your solution to transferring the text to the page was very creative and clean! Great craftsmanship. The capitals are clearly the stand out objects on your pages, which I love because I love hand-lettered type. I really like the F, it's a fish/mermaid, which was a clever way to add zoomorphism to your project! The repeated floral elements of your pages really bring them together (for example: the three-petaled flower & vines). Awesome job!

  6. Angie -
my favorite part of your illuminated manuscript is the treatment of the paper, and how clean/aged your transfer method ended up looking. The paper reminded me of all of the aged texts that we have looked at in class. My criticism is that there are several elements (such as zoomorphics) that seem to be missing... and there is a lot of blank space that could be occupied.

  7. Very nice, I like the unique knot work type designs you used and the floral patterns. The way you transfered the text was also very clever and it looks very clean!

I like the decoration of the capital letters, it reminds me of several of the manuscripts we've looked at in class, particularly the Beatus manuscripts. The incorporation of your zoomorphic shape into the F is very clever as well. The coloration reminds me of Beatus Manuscripts as well. Your organic shapes and dotting remind me of celtic manuscripts, like the first page of the gospel of mark from the book of durrow. The treatment of the page is also clever, and adds authenticity to the pages. Looks great!

  8. What draws me to your piece is the cleanness and precision that you managed to achieve! The craftsmanship is excellent. I think the blue border designs are very visually appealing and capture the attention to detail that was obviously very important in the creation of the original illuminated manuscripts.

  9. I like the knot work on the sides of your pages. I also like the A on your carpet page. I liked that you put some dots on the inside of it to make it more authentic. The colors that you used and the shapes of your letters reminded me of this page.

  10. I really like your designs a lot. I do wish the carpet page was more densely decorated, but your text page is just gorgeous. I love the mini capitals worked through the text, I saw a lot of that when I was researching the Book of Kells text pages. I think the simplicity works well for the text page, and the carpet page is a great start, I just wish there was more of that very pretty design work. I do love the patterns worked into the main design on the carpet page.
